จัดขึ้นเป็นประจำทุกปีสำหรับงานประกาศรางวัลแห่งวงการภาพยนตร์ที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดในโลกอย่าง Academy Awards หรือ งานประกาศผลรางวัลออสการ์ ซึ่งในปีนี้ก็จัดขึ้นเป็นครั้งที่ 89 กันแล้ว และในค่ำคืนของวันที่ 24 มกราคม 2017 เว็บไซต์ทางการ The Academy ก็ได้ประกาศรายชื่อผู้เข้าชิง (Nominees) ในสาขาต่าง ๆ ทั้งหมด 24 สาขา โดยปีนี้หนังม้ามืดอย่าง La La Land เข้าชิงทั้งหมด 14 สาขา ได้แก่ ภาพยนตร์ยอดเยี่ยม, นำชายยอดเยี่ยม, นำหญิงยอดเยี่ยม, ผู้กำกับยอดเยี่ยม, บทภาพยนตร์ดั้งเดิมยอดเยี่ยม ดนตรีประกอบภาพยนตร์ยอดเยี่ยม, เพลงประกอบภาพยนตร์ยอดเยี่ยม (เข้าชิงถึง 2 เพลงคือ City of Stars และ Audition (The Fools Who Dream), ถ่ายภาพยอดเยี่ยม, ออกแบบงานสร้างยอดเยี่ยม, ลำดับเสียงยอดเยี่ยม, ลำดับภาพยอดเยี่ยม, ออกแบบเครื่องแต่งกายยอดเยี่ยม และบันทึกเสียงยอดเยี่ยม ตามมาด้วย Arrival และ Moonlight ที่เข้าชิงเท่ากัน 8 สาขา ส่วน Hacksaw Ridge และ Manchester by the Sea เท่ากัน ชิง 6 สาขา
